What is migraine aura?

Before my migraines begin, I start getting visual symptoms, such as seeing flashing lights, zigzag patterns or blind spots that can last for around 20 minutes. I learned that this is a migraine symptom known as migraine aura, which can be a warning sign of an incoming migraine headache.

From my own experience, I know that the key to migraine relief is early recognition and taking medication as soon as symptoms appear. In my 20s, my GP diagnosed my migraines, but I never had medication on hand, so relief would be delayed. My day would be interrupted with migraine attacks that  often came with the feeling of nausea. Now I take migraine medication early, following preventative measures to help relieve my migraines, but it's taken a lot of trial and error to find what works for me.

Sometimes my migraines can come on while I’m out and about. Wherever I am, I know there’s Nurofen Migraine Pain containing ibuprofen lysine, which can help with relief of migraine pain.

Some people with migraine aura symptoms may not get a headache at all. Find out more about Migraine symptoms.

If it’s a migraine attack without the aura, I take my migraine medication at the start of the symptoms. Thankfully, my migraines aren’t too frequent – I’d say I only have one every month, but they typically occur on my busier days. So, I’ve done my research and take preventative measures to help reduce the number of migraines. I try to keep an eye out for any consistent triggers. I recently read that not drinking enough water and skipping meals are thought to be migraine triggers, so I try to keep hydrated and eat regularly.

Most of the time I only need to take the recommended dose of migraine medication once and it helps ease the pain. My main migraine symptoms are a headache and a sensitivity to bright lights, so I limit my time on the laptop and try to relax.

A few of my migraine attacks have lasted longer than usual. When this happens, I take another dose of Nurofen Migraine Pain after 4 to 6 hours. For me these longer attacks also come with nausea, so I visited my GP who recommended an anti-sickness medicine to help relieve the symptoms.

Migraines are best treated as early as possible. Nurofen Migraine Pain contains ibuprofen lysine which provides rapid relief from migraines for up to 8 hours when taking a 2-caplet dose. If you have any questions or queries about migraine symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor or pharmacist.
